UNITE South Carolina – Celebrating Ten Years of the Diversity Leaders Initiative
As part of the DLI program, participants work in small groups to identify, analyze and develop real solutions for real community issues. Some of these community action projects are the focus of UNITE South Carolina. This special edition publication features 10 DLI community action projects that are helping build better communities throughout the state.
Featured initiatives include creating safe summers for underserved children in Charleston; helping high school students in Summerton break down racial barriers and foster service leadership; bringing bikes, mentorship and adventure to at-risk youth in the Upstate; and more.
DLI community action projects are examples of leaders taking action as part of a diverse group – their DLI capstone groups – to build better communities and organizations. Though ten DLI action projects are featured to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of DLI, many more could have been spotlighted. There have been 160 projects over the past ten years, many of which are still on the ground across the state.
The publication, which exists in both print and digital edition, was sponsored by DLI designer and facilitator Juan Johnson and the stories were photographed and written by noted photographer Jean Shifrin of Atlanta.
