Upstate Drivers

Upstate Drivers recognized a need for a forum that would allow DLI graduates to remain in contact as well as to continue promotion of diversity in South Carolina. Therefore, group members proposed the idea of forming "The Upstate of South Carolina Diversity Council," whose primary purpose would be to provide this forum that will support successful diversity management within our communities.

Wanting to recognize outstanding schools in the Upstate region meeting central qualities of diversity, VALUED LIVES group members have established “The William ‘Bill’ T. Wylie VALUED LIves Award for School Excellence in Diversity” for the winning school that exhibited these qualities:

Voices of Diversity

Many people believe poetry is relegated solely to academics or to those possessing a specific artistic disposition.  But because everyone has a story to tell, the Voices of Diversity team is convinced anyone can become a poet. Through the writing and telling of our own unique stories, we can better know and understand ourselves, and others in our community.  

Wake Up Carolina

The purpose of Team Wake Up Carolina’s project is to inform the state of South Carolina about the prevalence of opioid addiction. Through the spread of personal testimonies of the effects of drug abuse, Wake Up Carolina will communicate its life-saving message about the signs of opioid addiction at schools, churches, police departments, and other locations. The project’s goals are to break stereotypes about drug addiction and to “turn the light on” when it comes to awareness of opioid addiction for communities around the state.

Walking with the Doc

The GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 21-mile multi-use trail that extends from Greenville to Travelers Rest. The beauty of the trail is that it affords all residents – no matter their age, race, or athletic ability – the opportunity to get fit and be active. However, research shows that less than 10% of Swamp Rabbit Trail users are non-white. This is especially troubling given that physical inactivity is a leading cause of chronic diseases like heart disease, which minorities are already at greater risk of developing.

Watch D.O.G.S.

WATCH D.O.G.S. ® (Dads of Great Students) is an innovative father-involvement, educational initiative of the National Center for Fathering. WATCH D.O.G.S., a K-12 program, invites fathers, grandfathers, uncles or other father figures to volunteer at least one day at their child’s/student's school during the school year. Individuals sign up at a kick-off event such as a “Dads and Kids Pizza Night,” “Donuts with Dad” or in the office at any time throughout the year.

Many pediatric providers in Beaufort County participate in the Reach Out and Read (ROR) program, a national, non-profit school readiness organization. Physicians, who take care of children, partner with ROR to give books to those aged 6 months to 5 years during their well child checks and to encourage parents to read aloud to them daily. Research by the ROR program has shown that children from families that participate have larger vocabularies, stronger language skills and a six month edge when they enter kindergarten.

Workgroup 4

Workgroup 4 decided to use its networking skills to assist the Darlington County School District begin a “Youth Apprenticeship Program” in Darlington County. The group used various contacts to pull in the State Director for Youth Apprenticeship and the contact at the Florence-Darlington Technical College for a meeting at the Darlington County Institute of Technology, a logical venue for Youth Apprenticeship.  With the help of Workgroup 4, the new Director of the DCIT has networked with the Darlington County Economic Progress Board to identify businesses that would be willing to sponsor a youth apprentice this coming fall.  As a by-product of the group’s work, the Darlington County School District is weighing its own options of becoming a Youth Apprentice sponsor.

World Changers Dream Team

The World Changers Dream Team partnered with approximately 50 students participating in the 21st Century after-school program at Pendleton Elementary School on a month-long project that explored both personal and social responsibility. The team facilitated opportunities for the 3rd through 6th grade students to learn about personal responsibility through a financial literacy curriculum and practice social responsibility by completing service projects together in small project teams.

York: M.A.L.E. C.A.L.L.

Our Goal: M.A.L.E. C.A.L.L. will empower male students in Rock Hill middle schools academically, socially, physically and emotionally.

Our Mission Statement: Through M.A.L.E. C.A.L.L., adult male role models and representatives from the Rock Hill Police Department will actively seek to establish a strong bond with middle school male students while instilling in them positive character traits, respect for others, and the value of education to assist them in becoming well-rounded, young men of integrity who contribute to the society in which they live.
