“Dreaming with the Fishes” of the Lowcountry DLI partnered with the South Carolina Aquarium to support Dreamnight – a free night at the Aquarium for children with serious illness, special needs or disabilities, and their families. The South Carolina Aquarium is pleased to introduce Dreamnight to the Charleston community in 2015 with the support of the DLI group. We envision an evening in which invited families are able to enjoy unique educational experiences tailored to their needs, plus complimentary admission, food and beverage, and entertainment. We are pleased to partner with MUSC Children’s Hospital to create a special and enduring experience.

The mission of the event is to provide a safe, stress-free evening of fun and education exclusively for children with special health care needs or disabilities, plus their parents, brothers and sisters.  In the inaugural year, the Aquarium is planning a manageable program that builds on its own proficiencies and the generosity of its partners. We anticipate reserving the Aquarium from 5 pm – 9 pm on June 10, 2015 with staggered, times admission for specially invited families totaling up to 500 guests. In addition to the Aquarium’s exhibits and programs, special animal encounters and interaction with educators will take place throughout the galleries. There will be fun activities and entertainment provided as well.

With the partnership of MUSC Children’s Hospital, the first year may focus on children with sickle cell disease and their families. With this population as the focus, it would allow the event to tap African American and Asian American families who have potentially limited experience and access to the Aquarium. MUSC is opening a new sickle cell clinic in the community, making a deeper investment in the treatment of the disease. As the Aquarium celebrates its 15th anniversary year, their desire to expand service to underserved audiences would make the event a great fit.
