Overarching Goal: Improve the health of babies and decrease the infant mortality rate in South Carolina by increasing health literacy, thereby encouraging women to access pre-natal and well-baby care.

The Issue:

Babies of mothers who do not get prenatal care are three times more likely to have a low birth weight and five times more likely to die than those born to mothers who do get care. “Health literacy,” or having knowledge and understanding of important health care, is an important factor in prenatal care and well-baby care. Our goal is to improve the health of babies and decrease the infant mortality rate by increasing health literacy and encouraging women to access pre-natal and well-baby care. We seek to leverage the relationships and connections among DLI alumni to broaden the circle of impact for the existing national text4baby campaign.

Text4baby sends enrollees free strategically timed text messages with critical prenatal and postnatal prevention reminders and education tips. Research shows 80% of Medicaid patients text regularly.
