Come Yuh

Placing special emphasis on the growing Hispanic community in the Lowcountry, members of the Come Yuh team focused on ensuring healthcare to all people by overcoming language barriers. Group members presented information about the disproportionately high percentage of the minority population, and Hispanics in particular, who live below the federal poverty line and are uninsured. The team surveyed local health care providers to assess the need for interpreters and to examine existing barriers to providing primary health care to Hispanics with limited English proficiency.

Surviving Humanity

Surviving Humanity team members focused on the vision of creating a Lowcountry Diversity Leadership Awards Dinner to celebrate regional diversity achievements and success. They modeled their dinner on the existing Upstate Diversity Leadership Awards Dinner. Awards will be given to nominees in several categories, including college student, high school student, business, individual, etc. Using the Upstate model, the group hopes to create community partnerships that will help realize the goal of an annual Lowcountry event sponsored by numerous regional organizations.

Project 7831

Project 7831 group members examined the inaccessibility of the banking system to the minority population, particularly the state's African-American population. The team researched statistics related to those who use banks and revealed in their presentation that a low percentage of minority citizens utilize banks when compared to their total percentage in the population.

Mozaik

Mozaik group members set their sights on providing an educational and fun summer program for many of the region's at-risk, or high-potential youth. Particular emphasis was placed on children between ages 7-12 living in the poorer peninsula communities around Charleston. Their vision culminated in the creation of a five-week night camp called "Camp Hope" that provides positive, educational experiences for these youth for five weeks during the summer. Team Mozaik utilized the power of partnership and brought together 24 agencies to partner in providing this camp.

Team 20/20

20/20 team members chose to create a diversity leadership program for young professionals in the Charleston region. Inspired by their own encounter with diversity leadership, group members wanted to share their experience with a growing population of young professionals in the region and set out to develop the Charleston Young Professionals Diversity Academy. Team 20/20's plan is designed to educate young professionals on diversity initiatives and create a business community of young professionals that is diversity-conscious.
