Dreaming with the Fishes

“Dreaming with the Fishes” of the Lowcountry DLI partnered with the South Carolina Aquarium to support Dreamnight – a free night at the Aquarium for children with serious illness, special needs or disabilities, and their families. The South Carolina Aquarium is pleased to introduce Dreamnight to the Charleston community in 2015 with the support of the DLI group. We envision an evening in which invited families are able to enjoy unique educational experiences tailored to their needs, plus complimentary admission, food and beverage, and entertainment.

Citizen Shapers

World Citizen Showcase will be an inspirational, one-time, competitive arts-based event involving eighth-grade students from one school from each of Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties. The project seeks to increase student engagement and foster their creative thinking, self-expression, goal setting, and career aspirations at a critical transition point between middle and high school.

Seeds of Health

“Planting the Seeds of Change for Healthier South Carolinians”

The Seeds of Health Group of the Low Country DLI partnered with EdVenture Children’s Museum and Novo Nordisk to develop a series of family engagement outreach events focused on diabetes prevention and awareness in a targeted community as a pilot project.  The Seeds of Hope group plans to replicate this model and to share these resources with other communities in South Carolina where group members reside.

MBA - Music Battery Ambassadors

The Music Battery Ambassadors (MBA) chose the Music Battery as our project. The Music Battery is a FREE after-school program operating Monday-Friday from 4-7pm at the Ferndale Community Center in North Charleston, SC. The program begins with tutoring in an effort to complete each student's homework assignments from school.  Upon completion, students migrate to the practice room where they warm up with calisthenics and marching drills.

Village Flyers

The Village Flyers Project (VFP) creates a bicycle club to serve middle school students in the underserved community of Plantersville in Georgetown County. Scheduled to debut next summer, VFP is based on Momentum Bike Clubs, a proven model successful in upstate South Carolina. It is aided by affiliation with the Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative Capstone Service Project. VFP uses an intentional approach to engage youth within their communities in a manner that affirms their assets and strengths.
