OTB: Out of the Box

Team OTB (Out of the Box) partnered with Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company, and the Upstate YMCAs to deliver financial literacy for children in grades 4–6. The focus of the project was to provide financial education and workshops for children in four areas: where money comes from; budgeting; savings & checking; and credit, using the online program Hands on Banking, offered by Wells Fargo www.handsonbanking.org.

People Plus

Team members of People Plus wanted to work with a project that would support high school students in a way that addresses some of the common challenges found in today’s school: cliques, intolerance, bullying, teasing and harassment. This past February, Greenville High School sponsored 3 day-long programs called “Challenge Day.” As a result, three hundred Greenville High School students and 100 adults (teachers, administrators and community members) came together in this program designed to empower young people and create unity.

Armonía

Armonía -- Spanish for "harmony" -- is a two-pronged project to create a music room for the homeless parishioners of Triune Mercy Center and to arrange for much-needed office space for the Hispanic American Women's Association.

The Bookworms

In an effort to encourage parent-child bonding and heighten community awareness of the importance of reading to and by young children, Bookworms partnered with Ready 4 Reading (www.ready4reading.org) to develop a network of partners and sustainability plan for the Ready 4 Reading’s Bookshelf Program. This program re-circulates gently used children’s books back into the community by making them available to low-income families through clinics, community centers, Head Start programs and schools.

DLI-ted to Bike

DLI-ted to Bike’s project is designed to help fifteen at-risk middle schoolers to get into the flow of “bike-friendly” Greenville. The middle schoolers will be from the Sterling Community, a neighborhood that is in transition. The DLI project will help provide these students with a more intimate overview of biking, better nutrition habits; and explain how to avoid poor eating and how a lack of exercise can lead to heath problems such as obesity, diabetes and a shortened life span.
