The Sixth Sense

Upstate Diversity Connections was formed to provide a forum for sustaining the enthusiasm and expertise of the Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative graduates once they have completed their formal diversity course requirements. The inaugural event was held November 28th, 2007, at Michelin. Former Secretary of Education Dick Riley and several local leaders spoke about their experiences in diversity management. Brock Koonce and Greenville Forward have agreed to sustain the effort and to host all subsequent events.

Touchstone

Team Touchstone sought to develop a project that could advocate for homeless individuals. Thus began team Touchstone's community action project, with a mission to uncover some of the stereotypes associated with the homeless population. More importantly, Touchstone seeks to highlight the varied issues often faced by children, teens and adults who have become members of this faceless and often overlooked segment of our Upstate South Carolina community.

Synergy

Non-profit organizations have experienced difficulty in maintaining diverse board membership. Synergy addressed the identification and recruitment aspects of non-profit board diversity. The group created an interactive website, www.SCBoardDiversity.com, to facilitate exchange of materials and information between interested candidates and various non-profit boards. This site is predominantly maintained by the USC Upstate Center for Nonprofit Leadership.

Impact 2020

Impact 2020 committed to supporting the identification of candidates to be future leaders in the political arena. The team partnered together with the “Go-Lead” program from the Greenville YWCA to accomplish this goal.The mission is to have a positive impact on the future of individual political involvement from underrepresented groups (women and minorities), as well as to develop a model which can be sustained through future community leaders.

The Council

Challenge Day is a unique experience through which students and community leaders become more meaningfully engaged in making campus life safer, creating a positive learning environment and establishing better communications among students and their teachers. It achieves its goals through a daylong sequence of powerful, high-energy exercises and reflections in which participants talk about their values and aspirations, while setting new goals that will shape their campus life.

S.O.L.E.S.

Members of S.O.L.E.S. (Strengthening Our Leaders, Engaging Society) worked with Youth Leadership Greenville students and asked them to capture their “views” of diversity through photography. Each student was given a digital camera and photos were judged by Upstate DLA Class VI. The photos chosen were published in a 2008 multicultural calendar and distributed to area businesses and non-profit organizations. In addition, a gallery showing and reception for the finalists and their photos will take place at the Clemson University ICAR Gallery in early 2008.
