“Walk in My Shoes” leverages city leadership support to allow a number of justice workers across disciplines to act as mentors to the youth enrolled in Goodwill® GoodGuides®' 52-week, school-based mentorship program. “Walk in My Shoes” also provides program enhancements at the launch of the engagement, a special neighborhood walk for the group to build greater empathy, and an incentivized “graduation” celebration upon completion of the full program for the youth and their families.

Walking with the Doc

The GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 21-mile multi-use trail that extends from Greenville to Travelers Rest. The beauty of the trail is that it affords all residents – no matter their age, race, or athletic ability – the opportunity to get fit and be active. However, research shows that less than 10% of Swamp Rabbit Trail users are non-white. This is especially troubling given that physical inactivity is a leading cause of chronic diseases like heart disease, which minorities are already at greater risk of developing.

IMPACT (Influencing My Peers as a Caring Team)

Project IMPACT was designed to raise poverty awareness high school student leaders in the Greenville community.  A specialized program provided a venue for 9-12th grade students to identify diversity blind spots and influence change in their school communities.  The inaugural program, held December 9, 2016, included over 50 student council class representatives from Greenville and Mauldin High Schools. Student leaders participated in a live-action poverty simulation designed to highlight everyday challenges some peers may face.

Storytellers

The Storytellers project is designed to develop an avenue for local schools to use the art of storytelling to teach the history of South Carolina. Storytellers will produce an oral history of the integration of Greenville County Schools and develop a lesson plan for middle school history programs. The oral history will weave period graphics with the videotaped personal interviews from actors who participated in the desegregation of GCS, including Secretary Dick Riley, AV Huff, Clyde Mayes, and others.

Bridges to Success

While there is a variety of well-established interventions and programs for families living in poverty, many parents lack the individual support needed to change their economic circumstances. Bridges to Success is partnering with the Upstate Fatherhood Coalition and the Greenville Literacy Association to address obstacles commonly faced by parents living in poverty, such as low educational attainment, unemployment, and incarceration.

The project’s goal is to combat generational poverty by creating a path for parents to become more economically secure.
