Communities in Schools Greenville

Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to keeping kids in school and helping them succeed in life. Their mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

CIS’s local affiliate, CIS Greenville, places Student Support Specialists in each of the OnTrack Greenville middle schools. Student Support Specialists provide wrap-around services for students who have been identified as at-risk of becoming off-track academically and/or behaviorally. In using Student Support Specialists to respond to at-risk students, the CIS model is integrated with services already offered at the school level. Student Support Specialists serve as community resource experts and work to develop a system of coordinated student and family supports for off-track students. These supports may include things such as tutoring, health care, transportation, and affordable housing.

CIS’s primary intended impacts are measurable improvements in attendance, behavior, and student course performance in English/language arts (ELA) and math. In addition, CIS’s program intends to affect several secondary outcomes, such as student engagement in school and quality of relationships between adults and students.
