Program Goal: We inspire learning and leadership everywhere that STEM matters in South Carolina and beyond.

Short Summary: In 2018, we celebrated 25 years of service as an advocate/catalyst for constancy and quality in science, technology, and engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in South Carolina. While we have not always been known as SCCMS, our core expertise has always been in supporting teachers and schools. The Coalition name, which dates to 2004, signaled the beginning of a broader reach into other learning and leadership spaces. Today, our affiliated organizations such as Science on the Move, Dreams Imagination Gift, the Lowcountry STEM Collaborative, and the Upstate STEM Collaborative engage in everything from mobile STEM outreach to afterschool programs to community STEM festivals.

Target Groups served: We serve the whole SC STEM ecosystem through programs that:

  • inspire communities and children to explore STEM learning and careers
  • enhance the knowledge, skills and abilities of educators
  • engage and align the efforts of organizations and individuals committed to STEM learning
  • inform key leaders and decision makers
  • explore, research, and innovate in areas of need

Schools/Districts served: Any and all. Between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2017 we delivered over 230,000 hours of direct, face-to-face professional learning support to educators and others from across South Carolina. We sometimes work in other states too. A complete listing of schools and districts we have served is available on request. Additionally, our virtual reach has grown from just over 14,500 interactions in 2011/12 to nearly 332,000 in 2016/17. We also engaged over 28,600 community members in STEM festivals and other open to the public STEM events in 2016/17.

Research: Our research base is extensive. Along with 25 years of hands-on, action research, we are guided by a Theory of Action and a body of research that underpins our Innovation Configuration Maps. Evaluation: External evaluation concluded that our four-year long, Inquiring Minds-Reading to Learn in Mathematics & Science (IQ-MS) research initiative was effective in meeting its stated goals. Over 94% of all participants in SCCMS programs who have completed surveys since 2011/12 have rated their learning experience positively.

SCCMS also submits a progress report to the Education Oversight Committee for the purpose of evaluating our return on the state’s investment. We have been recommended for additional funding in each of the past two fiscal years.

Resources

Annual Cost: ~$2.8 million annually since 2011/12 Funding Sources: $1.75 million annually from SC General Assembly. 
The remainder is generated from grants, gifts, and program fees.
Staffing needs: We would like to offer more face-to-face programs for educators and others in rural communities. Infrastructure/Equipment needs: We would like to be able to retire and replace about 5 lap tops/printers per year. We would also like to be able to expand our Science on the Move program in partnership with Dreams Imagination Gift (DIG) based in Barnwell Co. This would require a second micro-van.
