Advance Team 2008-2009

Meet the 2008-09 Riley Institute Advance Team!

The Fall of 2008 was an exciting and busy one for this year’s high energy A-Team. Enjoying a casual lunch with The Right Honorable Eibhlin Byrne, the 339th Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ireland; meeting Hodding Carter, Professor of Public Policy and Leadership at UNC-Chapel Hill and former US Assistant Secretary of State; and lunch with Marshall Goldman, Kathryn Wasserman Davis Professors of Russian Economics, Wellesley College and Senior Scholar at Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Harvard University were among the opportunities afforded these talented students.

The Spring continued to be even busier than the fall.  In January 2009, the students made their annual trip to Columbia for the Wilkins Leadership Awards Dinner.  The A-Team enjoyed a dinner reception and discussion on careers in foreign service with Thomas Boyatt, former ambassador to Burkina Faso and Colombia, and Foreign Affairs Council CEO in February. In March, the A-Team conceptualized, planned, and implemented a visit by Ambassador Carey Cavanaugh, Director of the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky.  And finally, they participated in a two-day national conference, China's Global Rise: International Relations in an Era of Change.

The Advance Team was led by Riley Institute Advance Team Intern Rachael Parrish, a political science and asian studies double major. Rachael was recently awarded the 2011 Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship.
