Presented by the Riley Institute and the Charleston Law Review of the Charleston School of Law

Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, Mother Emanuel AME Church, Las Vegas and the Sutherland Springs Church shootings are all devastating events that have changed our society’s discourse on state and federal firearm regulation. Gun safety advocates want restrictions placed on the Second Amendment, while many gun rights advocates oppose any regulations on gun ownership. This symposium is an opportunity to take a scholarly approach to better understanding what the Second Amendment promises, what it doesn’t promise, and how it functions as law. The keynote address was offered by two Duke Law School professors who are co-authors of The Positive Second Amendment: Rights, Regulation and the Future of Heller: Joseph Blocher and Darrell A. H. Miller. In addition, three panel discussions looked at Second Amendment doctrine, state and local attempts at gun control, and ethical legal representation in the Second Amendment arena.
