Professor Merle Black
Emory University

Nationally known expert on Southern Politics, Merle Black, of Emory University was at Furman January 28-30, 2004 during “debate week” as a Riley Institute Fellow in Residence.  He delivered a lecture, “The Rise of Republicanism in the South,” on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 in Hartness Pavilion on Furman’s campus.  His second lecture, “The Democratic Party in the South,” was held on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 in downtown Greenville at the East Court Grill.

Dr. Black did his undergraduate work at Harvard College and his Ph.D at the University of Chicago. His works on the Democratic Party in the South and the Rise of Republican Party in the south are not only the main texts in the field, but the definitive works on southern politics during the last two decades.
