About Roberta Metsola

Roberta Metsola was first elected to the European Parliament in 2013, becoming one of Malta’s first female Members of the European Parliament. She was re-elected as an MEP on the Partit Nazzjonalista ticket with a record number of votes for a female candidate in 2014.

Metsola is a Member of the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee and coordinator of the EPP group. She is a co-author of the European Parliament’s report on a ‘The Situation in the Mediterranean and the Need for a holistic EU Approach to Migration’. She is also a Member of the Terrorism Committee and the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the United States.

Metsola is currently a substitute Member in the Committee for the Internal Market and Consumer Protection and a Vice-Chair on the Petitions Committee and previously served as a member of the Special Committee of Inquiry into the Panama Papers before its mandate came to a close.

Professionally, Metsola is a lawyer who has specialized in European law and politics. She served within the Permanent Representation of Malta to the European Union from 2004 to 2012 as Malta’s Legal and Judicial Cooperation Attaché and Head of the Justice and Home Affairs Unit there. Following that, she joined the team of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, as a legal advisor. She left that role to fill the vacant seat of current Opposition Leader in Malta, Simon Busuttil, as an MEP within the EPP Group.

In her student years, she was highly active in various organizations, acting as the Secretary-General for the European Democrat Student organization between 2002-2003.

Born in 1979, Roberta Metsola is married to Ukko Metsola and is the mother of four young boys: Luca, Alec, Marc and Kristian. She graduated from the University of Malta and the College of Europe in Bruges.
