Team 5 Alive

During the first project meeting, team member and pediatrician, Dr. James Simmons shared that he recently lost three patients in a house fire. He questioned the need for smoke alarms in homes. Everyone sympathized with James. Team member and City of Beaufort Fire Chief, Reece Bertholf shared that fire detectors are often in homes but are not working. Reece also shared a safety tip some of us were not aware of and that is sleeping with your bedroom door closed can buy you minutes needed to escape and stay ALIVE.

Team Get Together

OUTLINE: “Team Get Together” presents the Charleston Privilege Walk as our Capstone Project.

NEEDS ADDRESSED: The goals of this group were to create a piece of art that would live on after project completion, one that would speak directly to concepts learned during the DLI, and one that gives viewers—despite their level of comfort on the subject—a subjective piece that would allow them to internalize the conversation around privilege and show how we are all affected by its existence.

Team Hot Spot

Team Hot Spot aims to bridge the digital divide that is so prevalent in South Carolina by expanding broadband access for students. Many programs, such as Apple grants, provide educational devices for students. However, when the students go home, many of them do not have access to Wi-Fi and so cannot use the devices to work on homework assignments. Through various collaborations with technology officials and organizations such as Connect South Carolina, Team Hot Spot will establish four Internet connectivity centers for students throughout the state.

Team Leverage

Team Leverage aims to promote financial literacy especially among populations that have historically tended toward financial instability. Partnering with Origin South Carolina, Team Leverage will help people gain financial leverage over their circumstances through financial counseling. Team Leverage will make presentations at various businesses, especially sharing ideas with human resources coordinators to spread the message about financial literacy.

Team MARVEL

Diversity Inspired Youth (DIY) is an annual program designed to promote diversity, inclusion, understanding and collaboration amongst high school students in their 11th grade year. It will have, as its model, The Riley Institute’s Diversity Leaders Initiative and will be targeted to high school youth in Greenville County.

Team Youth Success

DLI participants from Midlands Class V, Team Youth Success, designed and enlisted community members in implementing a program for upperclassmen at the RN Beck Learning Center, an alternative school that was established to provide a second chance for students who are expelled from their regular middle or high schools in Florence County District One. 

The Sixth Sense

Upstate Diversity Connections was formed to provide a forum for sustaining the enthusiasm and expertise of the Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative graduates once they have completed their formal diversity course requirements. The inaugural event was held November 28th, 2007, at Michelin. Former Secretary of Education Dick Riley and several local leaders spoke about their experiences in diversity management. Brock Koonce and Greenville Forward have agreed to sustain the effort and to host all subsequent events.

Through Our Eyes

The conversations that took place during the Spring 2014 Upstate DLI class were profound and impactful for this group, and created a desire to initiate similar, age-appropriate opportunities for the youth in the community. Through the 2014 IGNITE Summer Arts Camp, an annual camp offered by The Children’s Museum of the Upstate and the South Carolina Governor’s School for rising 7th and 8th graders throughout the state, the Through Our Eyes team had the opportunity to provide a unique experience.

Touch A Truck for Autism

Loud sirens, big trucks, and unusual looking uniforms can create a scary and confusing situation for someone with autism. As a result, first responders, families and individuals with autism face a challenge and potential risk, when an emergency occurs. The Touch a Truck for Autism team united to provide an experience where individuals with autism can become familiar with our first responders, their uniforms, trucks, sirens and other equipment.

Trailblazers

The Mary Black Rail Trail is a multi- use trail that runs through Spartanburg County. The group plans to utilize the Mary Black Rail Trail in order to build community and celebrate diversity. The goal is to celebrate some of the positive things that are already happening in Spartanburg – successes, history and where the community is going. Thirty percent of people who use the Rail Trail are minorities. The focus will be on this area because the trail brings people of different backgrounds together.
