Advance Team 2009-2010

Each new year brings new faces to our select Riley Institute Advance Team. This year’s A-Team came from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, New York, North Carolina and Texas. The students' chosen majors are widely varied — Political Science, Spanish, French, Business, Economics, Education, Philosophy, Asian Studies, History and Urban Studies.  The Advance Team members 2009-10.

The A-Team enjoyed interaction with some of our special guests - Helmut Schäfer, former German State Minister of Foreign Affairs and Christine Todd Whitman , former Governor of New Jersey and EPA Head - over lunch and informal conversations.

In January 2010, the students made their annual trip to Columbia for the Wilkins Leadership Awards Dinner.

Perhaps most significant to many Advance Team members is a special event that they work on throughout the year, a collaborative effort in which A-Team members are responsible for conceptualizing, planning, and implementing an event from beginning to end. On February 16, 2010, a panel discussion on “Youth in Politics” was presented by The Riley Institute Advance Team on Furman's campus. The panel included H. Boyd Brown and John Tynan, and the discussion was moderated by Professor Dorianne Norwood of the Department of Political Science at Furman. The objective of this panel was to highlight some unique facets of South Carolina politics and to provide advice as to how individuals can become more politically involved.

The Advance Team was led by Riley Institute Advance Team Intern Jonathan Cote, a political science and philosophy major, who is currently a student at Duke University School of Law.
